Bonus Grade Category
I would like to setup a Bonus Grade Category that has a specific weight, let's say 5 percent distributed equally between 3 grade items. Only students who complete items in this category should see that the weight has been added to their overall grade. Is this possible.

Hello Arlene,
Apologies for not getting back sooner. In the Weighted system, grade items add up as a percentage of the final grade (which is always 100%). The weight you assign to a category is what contributes to the final grade, not the individual items inside it.So, if you create a category worth 5% of the final grade and add 3 items inside it, those 3 items must total 100% of the category. That means each item would automatically count for 33.3% of the category. Since the category itself is worth 5% of the final grade, each item ends up being worth about 1.67% of the final grade.
Now using a Bonus grade category,- In a weighted gradebook, the category weight (e.g. 5%) contributes to the final grade only if students earn points in the bonus grade items.
- The individual grade items inside the category are weighted relative to the category, not the final grade. So if you have 3 items, each would be 33.33% of the category.
If a student completes none of the bonus items, their final grade remains unaffected (no bonus added). If a student completes one or more bonus items, the bonus percentage (up to 5%) is added to their final grade on top of the regular 100%. Students will see the bonus items in their gradebook and the final calculated grade will reflect the bonus only if they earned points in those items. The bonus is not shown as a separate “weight” but as an increase in the final grade. Bonus items cannot make the learner's grade exceed the maximum points specified unless you select the Can Exceed option. This is mentioned in our community documentation below:
