Displaying a Text Grade to Students
Hi, I was assisting an instructor who created a Text item in her Grade Book and entered letter grades for her students. This was just a standalone column not associated with a scheme. From the students' perspective, they could see the title of the text item in their grades but they couldn't see the letter grade entered by the instructor. To resolve this, I enabled the setting "Grade scheme symbol" through the Grade Settings → Course Display Options → Student View Display Options. I'm not sure why this was required since it was text column, again, not associated with a scheme but by enabling the setting, the students could then see the text entered in the column. The instructor responded stating:
"I generally don't want them to see letter grades for other assignments. Is there a way to disable the symbols in general but then override it to include symbols for those couple of entries that need it?"
My question is, is there another way to allow the text item's entries to appear for the students without enabling the Grade scheme symbol option?
Thank you.

@Richard.W.228 You should be able to leave the grade scheme symbol unchecked in the overall gradebook setttings, and then override that setting on individual grade items. Click the down arrow next to the grade item and choose Edit, then scroll down to the Display Options. You can check Override display options for this item and Grade scheme symbol under Student View.

Hi @Jennifer.W.973, to test your suggestion, I went into the Grade Book's Settings and disabled "Grade scheme symbol". Next I went to the settings for the Grade Text Item. Under "Display Options", I checked the box to enable "Override display options for this item". This prevented the text from appearing through the student's view when I tested it.
You also mentioned "…and Grade scheme symbol under Student View". That didn't present as an option when I selected Override display options for this item. Where is that located?
Thanks,

@Richard.W.228 Hi Rich, it looks like you may have to do the opposite since there are fewer display options on the text items and the letter grades are being treated like scheme symbols since they appear in the Grade column. I guess that makes sense since the text wouldn't be in the Points or Weight Achieved columns. Enabling Grade Scheme Symbol in the overall gradebook settings and then disabling it individually on all the other non-text grade items might be your only option here.

That could help.
Thanks.
