Efficient Workflow for Uploading Scanned Exams to Brightspace Without Manual Impersonation

Hello Brightspace Community,

We have a workflow challenge and are seeking your advice. Our students write their exams on paper, which we then scan and upload to Brightspace. Currently, our process involves impersonating each student to manually upload their scanned exam under the appropriate assignment submission section.

This process is time-consuming and prone to errors. We would like to keep the workflow where we handle the uploading (students should not upload the scanned exams themselves), but we're looking for a more efficient and automated solution.

Does Brightspace provide any tools, add-ons, or workflows that can help streamline this process? Specifically:

  • Is there a way to bulk upload scanned exams to assignments, matching each file to the correct student?
  • Are there any integrations or automated workflows (e.g., via APIs or third-party tools) that could assist with this task?
  • Are there alternative Brightspace features (e.g., portfolio tools or gradebook integrations) that might simplify the process?

We’d love to hear how others have tackled similar situations or any suggestions for improving this workflow.

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi Nisreen,

This is a great question! I have a couple of ideas.

    1. You can leverage the offline grading workflow to upload the submissions as feedback files. We might need to configure how the folders are structured when doing the download so that we have an easier setup for the upload using config variables. This would be especially helpful if the grading/markup was done on the paper prior to being scanned.
    2. Use the API to submit on behalf of learners.
