Why doesn't the Video player support .mpeg or .mpg file formats? Lots of older content and publisher resources are mpegs

Thank you for your question. To enhance the media experience on Brightspace, we support the following media types:
Uploaded Video Files:
.mp4, .avi, .f4v, .flv, .m4v, .mov, .webm, .wmv, and the ability to optimize for streaming (2GB max and up to 720p output)
Uploaded Audio Files:
.mp3, .m4a, .ogg, .wav, .wma (1GB max)
With the preferred media type to be .mp4 and .mp3 files. We are constantly evolving our products to ensure that Brightspace delivers the best experience for our users!

Yes, I'm aware of that list of supported file types. My question is why not support mpeg also?
