displaying a merge filed 'username' on the home page

We've commandered the Username field to populate a unique identifier for our users. We use the merge filed for it, so the number is displayed on their certificates.

I'd also like to display it within a customised welcome widget. The options to edit a widget include inserting javascript…I wondered if that's the way to do it? any pointers appreciated

I am not certain I fully understand your question, but I think you might be looking for a way to render the viewing user's username inside of a widget.

If yes, you can Automatically customize course content using replace strings, including widgets.

For usernames specifically, you'll want to use the {username} replace string.
