Planning Ahead for the Next Academic Year!

It’s hard to believe that the academic year is wrapping up for higher education institutions. I still remember clearly writing a post on tips for a successful school year back in September.

As this school year comes to an end, it’s already time to plan for the next one! I know that some will think, “Now?! Isn’t it too early? We’re just about to finish this year and need a break!”

I understand how hectic the school year can be for everyone involved in it. However, I’ve come to realize that partly or fully planning for the next year as this one is ending can very helpful. My 3 top tips for planning for the year ahead will explain why.

Tip 1: Reflect on the past year

Reflecting on what worked in the past year and what didn’t is the first step in the process of improvement. During this reflection, you’ll discover what needs to stay, go, or change. This will not only guide your planning and make it much easier, but it will also give you the opportunity to improve your skills and grow as an educator.

Tip 2: Give some attention to student feedback

Reading your students’ thoughts and comments on your course will help you understand their perspective of what worked and what didn’t. Your ultimate goal is to give them a great learning experience, so their opinions matter too!

Tip 3: Analyze your gradebook

Spending some time looking closely at your assignments and assessments (what objectives they targeted, what students scored on them, and how many students attempted them) could reveal interesting patterns about your evaluation strategy and course content.

Do you see why I said now is the best time? While feelings, reactions, thoughts, and experiences are fresh in your mind, make sure you reflect, analyze, and plan ahead!

What are your top tips for planning for the next academic year?

Shereen, you are spot on with your suggestions. I would suggest that folks partner with an ID or at least have an ID give the updated course a once over. It is always good to have a second set of eyes on review material.

    Best,
