Gamification and D2L. I been studying Gamification and Game Based Learning lately. Can folks, please share how they are using Gamification or GBL in Brightspace?

When I refer to Gamification or GBL in Brightspace I am NOT talking about the D2L Game Based Learning tool! We do not have that and will probably not get it.

Thank you,

Nancy

I've not used a lot of GBL in my Brightspace classes. But, I have leveraged a lot of D2L tools to help gamify particular components of my classes. I'll try to summarize:

    • leverage release conditions and awards/badges to help students "level up" or promote to the next level.
      • The main thing here is to not duplicate your grade book with a badge. If you've given a grade, don't give a badge, too. Instead, use the badge after they've completed an action or if they've scored over (or under) a particular threshold.
    • leverage custom widgets on the course homepage to create a leaderboard.
      • My students loved this but it was very very very manual on my part. I felt that I had to babysit it all semester to ensure that it was accurate.
    • leverage module descriptions and images to denote where students could level up/earn additional badges/etc. I also used the module descriptions to also help move forward the story line. For me, the storyline is a critical element of any gamified learning experience. Students should "buy in" to the experience. Another thing you may want to explore is the branching scenario feature in H5P, if your campus has a license. It's incredible and offers so really immersive opportunities.
