Cross posting for @Thomas Dreisinger  (This is the group I'd mentioned earlier- they love to help out with questions like this one!)

Instructional Designer Magicians,

What advice would you offer to the Excellent Dr. Dreisinger based on his questions also posted here (https://bit.ly/2W4qhAe) ?

"For the summer, I would like to consider taking the written content and put it into a format where the students would incrementally study sections of the material and be quizzed before they go on to the next segment. This is the way the TEACH course worked.

I have NO IDEA how to do this, or whether as single instructor, I can even do it."

    Hi @Thomas Dreisinger ,

Sounds like you're trying to use Release Conditions to set up a learning path in your course. When you attach one or more release conditions to an item, learners cannot see it until they meet the associated conditions. For example, you could attach multiple release conditions to a module-end quiz requiring learners to view all of the content pages in that module before they can attempt that quiz.

One way I like to use release conditions in a course design is to use a checklist that allows learners to self-identify which topics they would like to read about prior to a graded assessment. This can be particularly helpful if some of the course content might be familiar to them already.

However you may choose to use this tool, consider keeping the release conditions as simple as possible to avoid scenarios where it may be impossible to release an item.

Something to note is that once an item is released, access to it cannot be revoked via the release conditions.

Here are a few articles that will help you learn more about the available release conditions:

    Hi Amber,

I reviewed the links, but would not be able to do much with the video and list of tools. This is because everything I do in D2L is new territory for me. In fact, whilst I think I get the idea of ‘release conditions,’ I’m not clear on how best to use them.

I teach a physiology course with a defined objective grading structure. There are no rubrics. The students either know the information or they do not.

I think I understood from the video ’Tools that support release conditions’ that i could query students on materials they have read. Further that they could not proceed until they had satisfied the requirement of the release condition.

So, my specific objective is this. I would like to have written content, say on hormones, in the content area of my D2L (yet undetermined module). As they study the material, I would like them to be given a set of questions (like mini quizzes). These mini quizzes could populate a item in the grade book, so that this would be a real time grading function. I am uncertain about how to, for example, sum points from written content before loading a final content score into the item in D2L. This may be more than the system can do.

At any rate, I’m trying to decide whether to do this or not, because once committed, I will be all in. Additionally, in order for me to go ‘all in,’ I think I’m going to need some hand holding in addition to reviewing videos and reading text. I’m not that smart a guy. Without Craig Romanec, creating a gestalt and talking me through the process of mixing test question types, I would not have been able to sort it out from available material in the D2L video library I accessed. The process, in the end, was rational and pretty easy. I just need a real time dialogue.

Thanks for the email. I appreciate the time you have taken. I hope you all can help me with this. As I have said several times, I love this product!

    Kind regards,

    Ted

    Hi @Thomas Dreisinger ,

Sounds like you've got a solid assessment plan and just need to figure out the technical side of things.

There are a few further resources that can help you feel ready to build your course using Release Conditions. Check out [Archived Content] The Learning Center, which hosts Premium and Freemium Courses and Resources for D2L Clients who are members of the Brightspace Community.

Your college has access to the Subscription Training (Premium Content). Check out the Intermediate Content on release conditions and availability dates to learn more about how you can use these features in your course.

Subscription Training also gives you access to Just-In-Time Live Training Sessions. You can find out what sessions are happening and when from the calendar widget on the Subscription Training homepage (following the Announcements widget). There are some Q&A sessions coming up this month!

Click the session on the widget to view its details, add it to your calendar, then click the session link when it's time to attend. No registration required for these Just-In-Time Live Training Sessions.

Hope this helps you scope out the time needed to keep building your course!
