You might know the Visual Table of Contents widget can show course progress on a homepage, but did you know it also has lots of configurations that let you customize and optimize how you use this widget?
Did you know...
...module tiles can display descriptions?
If module descriptions are populated in your course, the descriptions will be automatically displayed on the back of module tiles (up to 180 characters). This feature allows your users to access more module information without having to leave the course homepage.
...the decorative image on each tile can be changed?
If an image is included in a module’s description, it will automatically be used as the image on the corresponding module tile in the widget. Choose images in landscape that have visual interest at the top of the image and avoid images with text. The selected image should be at least 768px X 400px. This option gives course builders an easy way to visually distinguish modules.
...you can split module tiles onto separate pages?
Turning on pagination for the widget will automatically separate the tiles into pages. The number of pages and module tiles displayed on each page is based on the user’s screen size. Pagination allows the Visual Table of Contents to take up less space on your course homepage and stops users from having to scroll to find important or necessary information. For a more condensed option, consider the Content Navigator Widget instead.
...the widget is dynamic?
The widget can be used in any homepage layout because it is responsive. This means it can be easily used in combination with other widgets. Our recommendation is to use it as the primary focus in either the “Large Panel Left” or “Large Panel Right” layout, allowing for the use of a supplementary widget beside it like the Welcome Widget you can hide modules in the widget.
A special prefix can be configured, and when it’s included in a module’s title, it will not be displayed in the widget. The default prefix is “***” but can be changed for the Organization or on a course by course basis. This configuration is helpful for hiding non-required content, additional resources, welcome messages, etc.
...each module tile contains three links?
Selecting on the decorative image will take you to the table of contents view of the module. But selecting the module title will always take you to the most relevant module (or submodule) based on what needs completed next. Lastly, selecting the “Next Topic” button will take you to the next unread topic in that module. These options give flexibility to users because they can quickly navigate to where they left off, while leaving the root module accessible as well.
