Need for User Experience (UX) category or tags

More explicit attention needs to be paid to the look & feel and User Experience (UX) concerns of those of us using the BrightSpace platform on a daily basis. Issues like:

• Lack of white space

• Too much white space

• Poorly formatted elements

• Too much clicking required

• Too much scrolling required

• Poor navigation and inefficient use of screen real estate on mobile

• Overly complex workflows

A great start would be to include a specific category here on the Community called "User Experience" or "UX".

This would allow issues related to UX to be gathered together in one place and hopefully to make their way to the appropriate UX team.

Related issues from the PIE include:

Reduce Whitespace on Discussion Posts (D6786)

Improve mobile (i.e. smaller screen) experience (D9601)

New content experience: Improve responsive design by removing margins on mobile devices (D7069)

Add a "Request Desktop Site" option for lap top users (D5352)

Slim Announcements | Image and Padding (D8986)

Visual Table of Contents (VTOC): collapse unused space (D6200)

Customizable appearance of tiles within Visual Table of Contents (D7816)

Ability to resize navbar icons and remove whitespace (D6597)

Better Scaled View (D10759)

More control of labeling and appearance in quiz UX (D11268)

Less whitespace when marking assignments (D7247)

Additional option for discussion rating system (D5167)

Yes! I would love to use more of the available space on homepages to have an improved layout of widgets & navbar items. Right now if you add more than a couple widgets, nobody uses them because you have to scroll down. Having it scale on a widescreen monitor would be great.

Also UX related - would love to have a dark mode toggle!

Yes, please! I would like to also add a lack of consistency - for example, the only place I can add a due date to a discussion board is in the edit in place mode while editing modules. It does not appear when editing discussions through the discussion menu.

oooh - these are some great suggestions and I'm hoping I have some good news on offer here soon!

@Mike.B.559 You've shared with me that you would like to insert your own Tags in Community. That suggestion has been inspiring some new conversations about how we can promote tagging in questions across all of Community but still leave room for creativity and new tags. We are working on something we hope will allow us to do both 🎉(You've seen the first part of that prototype in our virtual Fusion Lab, but we're hoping to incorporate more of your feedback on member created tags into the final design)

In the new workflow we'll still need to make sure questions are tagged with a Brightspace tool, so that we can deliver the specifics of your suggestions to the right product team as efficiently as possible.

For example @Travis.H.362, in future if your feedback had been shared in a post it might be tagged with UX but also with Homepage, Widgets, Navigation and Themes. Don't worry though- we'll still make sure those teams get this feedback! 😀

For Travis' feedback and also @Sarah.M.699's I would still want to recommend the creation/voting on a PIE Item related to these ideas. PIE Items are integrated into the roadmap planning sessions for our Product Team and is an important method of documenting these requests for future product design/development cycles.

Very grateful to each of you for staying in touch with us here- and I hope over the next few feature releases in Community I can show you just how that type of insight really helps to pave the way for new change!

Sounds positive Stefanie. I'll stay tuned! On a related note, I ran into another example of UX in need of improvement only moments ago. It has to do with the left margin of discussion posts. Aesthetic matters and just a little padding would make a world of difference!

    Hi @Mike.B.559
Grateful for the PIE item, and the screenshot!
I've shared your feedback with the Product Team.
Thank you for reaching out to us to share back

  • Hi everyone - Thank you for all the terrific feedback!

Just wanted to let you know that we do not have a single team that is responsible for UX/User Experience in Brightspace - ALL teams are responsible. Therefore the various PIE items listed above would need to be considered by a number of different teams depending on what area of the product the UX concern is in.
Please watch the individual PIE items for any updates.

Thanks for your response Monica. If that's the case, I would like to invite someone from the Discussion, Calendar, and Quiz teams to reach out to me.

    Hi @Mike.B.559
We have a few folks out of office at the moment. I have shared your interest in connecting with these product teams with your account manager as well as with each respective product team.
