Hi. I can hardly believe it's soon going to be September. But here we are. This month, our topic is Fostering Metacognition in University Education: Developing a Community of Metacognition Champions Prof Emma O'Neill is one of three University College Dublin Teaching Fellows who have designed a learning resource on "Metacognitive Teaching and Learning Strategies" that is featured in D2L Brightspace Community Learning Centre. We are excited to have Prof Emma O'Neill talk to our group about their research-based Metacognition Design Framework which forms the core of this learning resource and discuss how we could use this to champion metacognitive skill development in our teaching, regardless of the subject area. Prof. Emma O'Neill is Associate Professor in Small Animal Medicine at University College Dublin, Ireland. She is also a UCD Fellow in Teaching and Academic Development and member of UCD's Centre for the Study of Higher Education. Emma is passionate about stimulating students to think and helping them to grow their skill-base. She has taught in undergraduate and postgraduate Veterinary Education for over 25 years and is Programme Director for a distance-learning postgraduate programme for practitioners. The latter sparked her interest in online learning and the huge potential afforded by blended and online learning environments. As part of her teaching Fellowship, Emma worked with three other UCD Fellows, Crystal Fulton (Social Sciences), Carmel Hensey (Science) and James Matthews (Sports Psychology) on a project, "Harnessing the VLE to promote metacognitive skills in students," which has formed the basis of their ongoing research.
