Following our September AIG meeting focused on supporting students with ADHD, we have Liz Prickett from Colorado Mesa University (CMU) leading our October meeting with a discussion on "Reducing Cognitive Load for Instructors." Liz has graciously offered to share their best practices at CMU around supporting their instructors with or without specific cognitive concerns. She has offered some seed questions to inspire all members to bring their own experiences and best practices and participate in the discussion:
1. What are some ways we (can) provide chunked and responsive content to our instructors? How do Brightspace and incorporated tools facilitates this? How can we encourage instructors to prepare similar materials for students?
2. How can we provide opportunities for instructors to practice and check their work? How can we save them time to focus on their content and engagement with students vs. spending their time on the tech?
3. How can we provide instructors with choices for multiple means of expression as well as encourage them to produce multi-modal content and engagement for students? How can we leverage the options provided by Brightspace and incorporated tools?
Liz Prickett is the Next Generation Learning Specialist at CMU's Office of Distance Education, which includes being an admin for Brightspace and other instructional tech and training. With a Masters in Higher Education, Liz has focused her entire career on higher education, stepping through private, Christian liberal arts colleges, a large public university, and a community college before she joined CMU in 2019. She has served in a wide spectrum of positions, including athletics and outdoor ed, student academic support services, assistive technology, professional development/teaching and learning center, and distance education. Liz loves creating (and helping others create) usable/accessible and engaging learning activities.
Please join us on Thursday, October 7th at 11 am Eastern.
