Sorry this got sent out slightly later than I planned. Also, to all the folks on Digest mode, I made some changes to how the list sends out messages. I hope with the changes, you can actually see all the meeting time info. If not, it’s on Thursday June 3 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern.
Putting the microscope on Accessibility in the Sciences!
Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai And Ainsley Latour (she/her/hers)
Students with disabilities face numerous barriers in pursuit of science education. These include negative attitudes, lack of role models, lack of accessible format educational materials, and significant learning barriers in the science classroom and laboratory settings. Educators are often unsure of how to effectively teach science concepts to disabled students’ frames of reference, and/or unsure of how to develop appropriate accessibility solutions in the lab and classroom settings. IDEA-STEM’s vision is to increase the accessibility of science education. We aim to do this through providing educator resources, conferences and workshops, and by building a network of practice with science educators. This presentation will introduce IDEA-STEM and summarize key issues in accessible science education for students with disabilities.
Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai is the Director of Research and Chief Inclusion & Accessibility Officer of the CNIB. Dr. Sukhai is Canada’s only congenitally blind biomedical research scientist, and the world’s first congenitally blind geneticist. Dr. Sukhai led several nationwide research initiatives in Canada to examine the learning experience of students with disabilities. He is the lead author of the book Creating a Culture of Accessibility in the Sciences, published in 2016. Dr. Sukhai is passionate about accessibility, inclusion and universal design in STEM education, digital and online learning, and in the workplace.
Ainsley Latour is the president and co-founder of IDEA-STEM, an organization created to enhance participation and inclusion for people with disabilities in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Healthcare. Ainsley also maintains a practice as a licenced cyto and molecular genetic technologist. She holds two undergraduate degrees, two graduate diplomas, and will graduate soon with a master’s degree in Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her research around the experience of students with disabilities in Canada has been presented at national and international conferences on science and disability. She also serves on the Government of Ontario’s Post-Secondary [Accessibility] Standards Development Committee. Ainsley identifies as hard of hearing and neurodiverse.
See you on Thursday.
