D2L is committed to innovation and creating a platform that enables inspired learning experiences. Unfortunately, legacy technology can slow advancement. Legacy Capture (versions 9.5 and earlier) exists on a standalone infrastructure that sits outside of Brightspace. It provides clients with a non-LMS environment (Capture Portals) to create, store, publish, and manage video presentations, but Legacy Capture (9.x series) and the older infrastructure is not optimized for current video file storage and publishing demands. Legacy Capture has been in service for an extended period and the user base has eroded over time. The remaining clients use a small percentage of the overall legacy feature set. In addition, supporting multiple infrastructures makes development and improvements for video products more difficult. When development resources can focus on a single codebase, it allows for greater advancement of the audio-video suite within Brightspace.
End of Life Timelines
Starting in July 2022/20.22.7, key legacy features are available within Brightspace starting with Capture X (Capture 10). Capture X is currently part of an Early Access Program for Creator +. Once the latest version of Capture X is generally available, D2L will work with Capture 9.5 customers to plan their migration off their legacy implementations to Capture X. Legacy Capture instances will continue to function and will remain active until your migration is complete.
Existing Legacy Clients with a Brightspace package will be moved off their current Legacy Capture instances to the new version of Capture within Brightspace in the Fall/Winter of 2023 if it fits with your needs. If you are a Legacy Capture customer and do not want to explore the new options of Capture X, we will support you through the transition off Legacy Capture. For more information, see Capture X upgrade path for Legacy Capture clients.
Note: If you are a Legacy client without a Brightspace package, and you are interested in Capture X, contact your D2L Account representatives about the right Brightspace package for you. If you do not want to purchase a Brightspace package, you have the option to move your content to another location. The Brightspace Media team can help you to migrate your content using a secure transfer.
New information will be added to this article as it becomes available. To help provide the most current information about the End of Live and migration of Capture content, D2L recommends you follow this article.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens to all my video content stored in the current version of Capture?
D2L is keeping the legacy infrastructure live until Fall / Winter 2023. If you are interested in Capture X, we will work with you to migrate the needed content. If you are not interested in Capture X, we will assist in moving your content to another location by secure transfer.
The links you have embedded to Content in Brightspace will continue to work as expected after the transition to the new storage location.
Will Capture X have all the features of Legacy Capture?
There are numerous improvements in Capture X related to moving within Brightspace; however, some features cannot be replicated. Support for legacy hardware, Lecture Capture scheduling automation (including hardware scheduling support), Capture Portal and Live streaming options will not be part of Capture X. It is possible that some of these features may be a part of future development plans, but there currently no plans for those items. External user sharing is also changing; but will be available in a future release.
What will happen to my Capture Portal instance?
For now, nothing changes, but the Capture Portal instance will no longer exist when the old infrastructure is turned off in Fall / Winter 2023. We will assist in moving the content you want to keep.
I am a standalone Capture client without a Brightspace Core package. What are my options?
All future versions of Capture will be housed within Brightspace. If you are a standalone client and are interested in Capture X, please contact your D2L Account representatives about the right Brightspace package for you. If you are not interested in Brightspace packages, the D2L Media team can help you to migrate your content to an alternate location using secure transfer. Please contact your D2L account representatives to reach out to the Media Team.
What happens if we don’t want all the content in our Capture Portal instance?
The Brightspace Media team can exclude certain sections of your library. For more information, see Capture X upgrade path for Legacy Capture clients. D2L recommends you check back frequently for more migration information as it becomes available.
Legacy Capture fills a need for my organization, why is it being changed?
Only a small portion of the feature offerings are being used. The legacy platform is large and maintenance is a significant drain on resources. By streamlining and focusing on the parts that offer the most value within Brightspace, we'll be able to refine the offerings and more quickly improve the features that are being used.
What will my files and organization look like after they are moved (files and users)?
The infrastructure of Legacy Capture is different than Brightspace’s Media Library. There are some changes to how content is managed. After the migration, all content is assigned to the Brightspace Administrator role as an owner. Information on the original uploader / owner and folder is appended to the description and can be used to search for and reassign as needed.
What happens to my existing Capture content being used within Brightspace?
The links within Brightspace continue to connect to the correct videos.
