Microsoft has recently announced the launch of the Microsoft 365 LTI app, which consolidates all of its LTI integrations into a single experience. As part of this transition, the Teams Classes LTI and Teams Meetings LTI tools will be retired.
Important Information
- No new deployments of the Teams Classes or Meetings LTI tools are supported in the Microsoft LTI Registration Portal.
- Existing deployments will stop working after September 15, 2025.
- A new unified LTI experience, built on LTI 1.3, became available in July 2025 under the Microsoft 365 LTI app.
What the New Microsoft 365 LTI App Includes
- Unified access to OneDrive, Teams, Class Notebook, Reflect, and more, directly in Brightspace.
- The ability to add content, create assignments, and schedule meetings.
- Replacement of the deprecated Teams Meetings and Teams Classes LTI tools.
- Expanded support for Microsoft Assignments, OneDrive, OneNote Class Notebooks, and Reflect.
Microsoft confirms that Teams already created or synced via the LMS, as well as meetings scheduled using the existing LTI tools, will not be disrupted. However, institutions should plan a timely transition to the new experience.
The new Microsoft 365 LTI app also brings OneNote into the LTI 1.3 framework, offering a streamlined provisioning flow for educators to set up Class Notebooks more easily, while ensuring that existing LTI 1.1 notebooks remain functional and content can be copied forward.
Please note: the Brightspace Course Connector for Microsoft Teams will not be impacted by this change.
Recommended Next Steps
D2L Brightspace continues to support LTI 1.1 but strongly encourages Institutions to migrate to LTI Advantage (LTI 1.3) to ensure long-term support, security, and functionality. See here the benefits of migrating to LTI 1.3.
- Audit your current use of Microsoft Teams LTI in Brightspace. Identify which workflows and courses rely on it.
- Plan your migration to the new Microsoft 365 LTI app, testing it with the preview released in July 2025.
- Coordinate your deployment timeline to complete the migration before September 15, 2025.
- Communicate with stakeholders—instructors, staff, IT teams, and administrators—so they are prepared for the transition.
Important: This is a Microsoft-owned integration, and support for any migration-related issues lies with Microsoft, not D2L.
