What is Submission Review?
Submission Review is a public candidate final LTI standard as part of the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)® Submission Review Service which allows an instructor to launch from the Brightspace grade book to the associated content from the External Learning Tool. Submission review use cases include:
- Indicate to an instructor that a submission has been made.
- Launch out from the gradebook to the tool to complete an evaluation after a student submission.
- Launch out to a previously evaluated submission to gain more context about the submission.
- Launch out to complete an update to the grade and comment.
Note: Grade and comment information is automatically returned to the platform.
Why is Submission Review Important?
Submission Review brings parity in functionality between the External Learning Tool and Brightspace content. Without Submission Review, instructors must navigate through Content to launch to the External Learning Tool content, which is an inconsistent and poor user experience.
Now, with Submission Review, the instructors can launch out to external content from Grade Book as is done with Brightspace activities. External Learning Tool submissions are indicated by the External Tools (building block) icon; clicking the icon launches directly to that submission from the external learning tool in a new window.

This standard expands the functionality of statuses available through LTI. Previously, only the Complete and Fully Graded statuses were supported through LTI. Now Submitted and Pending Manual statuses are supported, informing instructors when learner submissions are ready for evaluation.
Important: This standard is only available through LTI 1.3, which encourages customers to migrate to the new standard, and off the LTI 1.1 standard which is currently no longer supported by 1Edtech.
What Types of Launches are Supported?
Submission Review launches can be completed from the following areas of the gradebook as indicated by the External Tools symbol:

- By clicking on a learner from the Enter Grades Table in Learner View.

Note: Currently, Submission Review launches can only be complete for grades that are associated to content from an External Learning Tool (that is, has a resource link). Standalone grades such as participation, attendance, or unit summary grades that aren’t associated with content (that is, have no resource link) from the tool are not applicable for Submission Review launches. If this is a significant barrier to your workflows you can vote for this functionality using the Product Idea Exchange portal.
Who Can Use Submission Review?
While instructors are the primary persona for Submission Review launches, Submission Review launches can be completed by any user with access to the grade book. Learners currently do not have access to Submission Review launches from the learner grades; this was an intentional decision to maintain feature parity between External Learning Tools and Brightspace content across all personas.
What Tools Support Submission Review, and How to Join the Beta?
Turnitin, Harmonize and Cengage support the Submission Review standard. The standard has recently been moved to the Public Candidate Final stage and can be found in Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)® Submission Review Service. If you use these tools with an LTI 1.3 integration you may benefit from the submission review standard, contact your support representative to inquire about joining the Beta release of submission review.
