We continue to hear great stories about how our clients are leveraging Brightspace Data Sets to help drive better student outcomes. Back in June, we provided a simple Excel example to help you get started using the Learner Usage Advanced Data Set.
The Learner Usage example focused on aggregating data across your Brightspace users, and showing how and where users were engaging with content and courses.
In this example, we’ll show some different examples using the Instructor Usage data set that will focus on data based on role, course or user.
We’ll stick to using Excel, and it’ll still be an easy three step process to see results.
Step 1: Generate the Data Set
To generate the Instructor Usage Data Set, visit the Data Hub link in your Navbar and click on Instructor Usage in the list. When you generate the data set, you can easily filter by Department, School, Course, or any other organizational unit that exists in your Brightspace Instance, as well as by role and date range.
Step 2: Populate the Workbook
Using an application like Microsoft Excel, you can then easily generate visuals and graphs on important usage data (Instructions are included within the Excel spreadsheet). Using the Excel template attached to this post, simply paste your entire Instructor Usage export in the ‘Instructor Usage CSV’ worksheet. Next, in the Excel Menu, go to Data and click ‘Refresh All’.
Step 3: Generate the Visuals
In this workbook, you will see three worksheets: By Role, By Course and By User. Each contains an example of the data and insights you can generate using a single Brightspace Data Set.
Figure: A tool usage filterable by course chart.
Similar to our previous example, these are generated using Pivot Charts – an incredibly powerful function included with Microsoft Excel that allows you to easily filter and change data sources.
We hope these samples help you get started using Brightspace Data Sets and we can’t wait to hear more stories about what you’re doing with Brightspace Data Sets to drive better outcomes within your own organization!
