Following the deprecation of legacy Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standards by 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global), significant changes are underway across educational technology platforms.
As of June 30, 2021, 1EdTech no longer certifies LTI versions 1.1x and 2.0. Support for these legacy standards officially ended in June 2022. In alignment with this industry shift, D2L Brightspace continues to support LTI 1.1 but strongly encourages Institutions to migrate to LTI Advantage (LTI 1.3) to ensure long-term support, security, and functionality.
Microsoft has announced recently that it is adapting to this transition by discontinuing support for LTI 1.1-based integrations of Microsoft Teams (including Teams Classes and Teams Meetings). Important information to highlight:
- No new Teams LTI 1.1 deployments are supported in the Microsoft LTI Registration Portal
- Existing Teams LTI 1.1 deployments will stop working after September 15, 2025.
- A new unified Teams LTI experience, built on LTI 1.3, became available in July 2025 under the Microsoft 365 LTI app.
Microsoft confirms that Teams already created or syncing via LMS, and meetings created using the existing LTI 1.1 tools, will not be disrupted. However, institutions should plan a timely transition to the new experience.
Recommended Next Steps
- Audit your current use of Microsoft Teams LTI in Brightspace. Identify which workflows and courses depend on it.
- Begin planning the migration to the new Teams LTI integration (based on LTI 1.3). Test it using the preview version released in July 2025.
- Coordinate your deployment timeline to complete the migration before September 15, 2025.
- To ensure a smooth and coordinated transition, inform all stakeholders—faculty, IT teams, and administrators—of the upcoming changes.
