Hi Everyone,
We are working with a faculty member who wants to track student usage (viewing content) in Brightspace and track how that may or may not impact student quiz scores and overall grade. We have worked with a data consultant in DOMO and were able to get some of the data, but it is an enormous file and would take a lot of effort to make it usable to her. Aside from the large amounts, it seems Brigthspace only tracks last access, not a timestamp of every time a student clicked or entered a resource. Any thoughts on how to approach this issue that I may be overlooking? Thanks! Lauren

@Lauren Panton Are you using the Content User Progress data set? It could be that only the last visit is retained and the previous ones are written over, but you could still get the number of visits and total time spent on the content item.

@Lauren Panton At the HvA we use Content User Completion.. You would need to check how Brightspace is configured and how you instructors are using the function of marking an item as completed.

Thanks, @Jennifer Wagner and @Susana Coppo . I failed to add the most important piece -- she wants to get a report on which students viewed resources (broken down by week by week) in the course. The goal is to correlate this data with how students performed on tests and overall course grade. Any other ideas on how to approach this? Thanks for your insights.

Hi Lauren, Learner usage, advanced data set, has some very handy aggregations. It can be generated based on a period. It might help you out,

Thanks, @Susana Coppo I will definitely check it out. She is looking for something similar to what she can see in our lecture capture system where it will show her a list of students broken down by content item and weekly views. She wants to see if her supplemental material is being used by students both before and after the quiz. I feel like there are so many data points in Brightspace, I feel like I may be overlooking a solution.

Hi Lauren,
I am a student myself, but also interested in developing on the D2L platform. I got an email notification regarding new posts here, and thought I might share that some students "Download" content and view it "Offline". When this is done, students access content offline that is still marked as "Unviewed" within the "Content". I have had professors in the past think I was not viewing content when I downloaded the entirety each day instead (to view offline).

Hi @Lauren Panton, has your instructor used the Class Progress tool before within her course? It may be a simple solution for her use case without pulling in the data into DOMO. It will allow her to see completion progress across all content in the dashboard view (https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/le/user_progress/instructor/class_progress_overview.htm) and she can compare it with quiz scores in that same dashboard view. When clicking on a student, she can see the completion statistics on a per module basis (e.g. by week if that's how modules are organized) and time spent. See the content screenshot here as an example: https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/le/user_progress/instructor/class_progress_overview.htm
Class Progress will also indicate whether a student has downloaded a content item: https://documentation.brightspace.com/EN/le/user_progress/instructor/accessing_data_in_bdp.htm
