Hello everyone,

I have a question about grading in Brightspace. I hope you can help me, as this seems to be an European use-case.

User scenario:

Every student has to submit a file in their submission folder. They will receive a grade for this submission. If the grade is lower than 5,5/10 they can retake the Assignment by submitting their retake submission in the hope they will receive a grade >=5,5/10. The highest grade out of two attempts is the final grade.

How can I configure this in Brightspace (gradebook)?

  • Do I have to make two submission folders and two grade items, in which the 2nd folder will be conditionally released if grade1 <5,5/10? If so, how do I configure my grade items?
  • Do I have to make one submission folder with unlimited amount of submissions?
  • Special Access?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Joost - thanks for the question. I'd be interested to hear how other institutions were handling this use case, but a simple approach is to enable 'unlimited submissions' on the assignment. The submission can be graded, and then if the student wishes to re-submit a second attempt, they can do so with the original assignment folder. This could be re-graded by the instructor, and the new grade published.

This approach doesn't put any restrictions on students re-submitting, though that kind of rule could also be communicated to the student through the assignment description.

Thanks Michael; I'm interested in the experience of other institutions as well!

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't re-grading mean that the 1st attempt grade will be unavailable for the student? Or is there way for students to see the grading history of a submission folder?

Also, when the '2nd attempt grade' < '1st attempt grade' you might not want to publish this grade, as you want the highest grade to remain.

Yes, this is correct - currently, doing this workflow within a single assignment means re-writing the grade, and Brightspace doesn't have a multiple attempts capability. One possible workaround is to preserve the previous attempt feedback/grade in the feedback field. Others create a separate assignment for the additional attempt, as you suggested above.

There is a PIE feature request for this very item - which suggests it is not a Euro-centric feature! The PIE item is: D4006 - and I recommend adding your votes and comments there, so we capture everything in one place.
