Data Model Question

We are considering Performance+. I would like to know if the data model used by Performance+ the same as the Data Hub BDS or does it provide access to data that is not available in the Data Hub. I have not been able to get a straight answer.

It already seems like the Advanced Data Sets are not using the same data model as presented by the BDS. After struggling to re-create the same data as in an ADS in order to be able to expand it, I asked support to let me know which BDS are used by each ADS and they wouldn't tell me.

If it does use a different data model, is that published anywhere ? I have looked and haven't been able to find it.

One of the areas that the datasets are vary much lacking have to do with LMS administrators as a type of user. There is very little data available to help support the actual administration of the LMS such as performance and usage information about various features. I had to use Google Analytics to find out which assessment tool was being used most so that I could optimize the navigation bar in courses. I am hoping P+ might be able to provide more of this information. However, I can't tell if I can't see the data model.

Hi, we have P+, but if I wanted to answer this question for our site I would use regular BDS, determining the use of various assessment tools per course offering. We collect BDS to our data lake.

I think that the data is similar but the data sets are not live data but updated every 24 hours, so if you are trying to match data sets data to Insights Portal or custom analytics. The insights portal does provide an admin dashboard that features access, tools adopted, enrolments and withdrawals. It does not provide user device information as some other tool dashboards do. Hope that this helps.

What I am trying to surmise is if there is more data available in P+ than from just the data hub. I am not referring to how current the data is, rather the data model itself. Is there a attribute in a table available from P+ that is not available using just the BDS.

If anyone has figured out how to generate any subset of the Advanced Datasets from the BDS, I would appreciate sharing.

We use Performance+, with that you get the Insights Portal which has pre-built reports, I've not seen anything in these reports which couldn't be built from BDS data. You also get the Analytics Builder where you build reports using BDS datasets, this would be the same as exporting all the BDS data to a data lake and querying it from there.

I have rebuilt the ADS 'Learner Usage' from BDS datasets using the Analytics Builder, like you said, in order to expand it. It did require quite a lot of work to reproduce though, primarily because of 'Content Required' which was the real challenge with this one. I can't share what I've done as an end query but can probably provide an overview of the approach that I took.

A big benefit for us is the Analytics Builder which gives you a maintained environment to build complex queries using the BDS datasets without being a dB expert (which I am not) and share them as reports which then get updated each data when the BDS datasets are refreshed. We've built these for our administrators to report on assessment tool usage as well as monitoring things like late submissions and non-submissions. Due to the way we structure our instance, any 'off the shelf' reports didn't help so being able to build reports that automatically refresh each has really expanded how we can manage the system.
