What is GBL?
Game Based Learning (GBL) is a tool built into Brightspace that enables our Clients to create an immersive game like experience inside of Brightspace. Instructors or Course creators can create a GBL map with a sequence of activity nodes that are linked to Brightspace activities such as Quizzes, Assignments and Files.
Why are we Making This Decision?
Where gamification used to be a highlighted feature or functionality, it has become standard in most ed-tech software products with applications such as badging and other reward and motivation techniques, encouragement of varied learning styles, games to teach and reinforce concepts, and ways for students to become interested and engaged. Our Game-based solution missed the mark on a gaming experience, and many of the gamification aspects still remain with release conditions, awards, and awards leaderboard
What is the Impact and Transition Plan for Active Clients?
Clients will still be able to use release conditions and badges achieve some gamification in their courses. Additionally, Creator+ Elements and Practices can also be used, along with the Awards Leaderboard to further the gamification within the course.
On the EOL Date, the game map will disappear.
FAQ
Is GBL enabled on my environment? What is the best way to disable it?
GBL is enabled via Organization Tools, and you can see if it is enabled there. To disable it, you can turn it off in Organization Tools.
Can D2L Provide a list of users who have accessed GBL?
Admins can find out which users have accessed a Game Map Topic by using the Content Object dataset and the Content Progress dataset.
What will happen to my existing game-based learning and data after EOL?
Existing game maps and topics will be deleted and any data will also be deleted and no longer available.
I use GBL in Content today. Will those topics disappear? What happens to content module completion if they do?
Content Topics containing Game Maps will be left, but the game maps will no longer be available. Completion will remain.
