URL Changes - FAQ
What is a URL?
A website URL is the address of a specific website on the internet. For your Brightspace learning environment, this is the web address users will see when logged in.
How many URLs can be in used to access a single Brightspace learning environment?
One URL (primary URL) is supported for site access and navigation. You can use additional URLs to reach the login page; however, all users are redirected to the primary URL after they are authenticated.
What types of URLs can be configured to access a Brightspace learning environment?
You may choose from two types of domains to host your site:
- A Brightspace-managed (Default) URL
Example: [subdomain].brightspace.com
- A Custom (Vanity) URL
Example: [subdomain].[yourdomain].com
Are there any limitations on the use of a custom URL?
Yes, your custom URL cannot be:
- A root domain
- An alias A record
- The same as your mail domain, or used for anything mail-related.
- CNAMEd to another CNAME record
Note: as these are technical client-side considerations, it is an effective practice to involve someone from your team who is typically tasked and comfortable with managing domains.
Can a Brightspace learning environment URL be changed, or changed from one type to another?
Yes, you may change your primary URL. In changing the URL, you may also decide to change from a Brightspace-managed (Default) URL to a Custom (Vanity) URL, or vice-versa. However, there are a host of technical considerations that must be accounted when changing the primary URL post-implementation.
How complicated is the process for changing a URL, and will D2L help coordinate this change?
There are a host of considerations and with that varying levels of complexity. Additionally, because a domain change is typically prompted by or surrounded with other branding requirements, there may need to be other changes coordinated.
Due to the nature of this change, URL changes are managed by D2L’s implementation services who will help to coordinate a smooth transition.
What are some of the considerations one should consider before requesting a URL Change?
Some things you may want to consider before requesting a URL change:
- Will your organization name be changing?
- Will any homepages, navbars, or content need to be re-branded?
- Will your mail domain be changing?
- Will any user information be changing (i.e. email addresses)?
Is there a charge to change the URL after the Brightspace learning environment has been configured?
Yes, as this change requires coordination with and oversight by our implementation services team, there is a charge.
