Understanding approaches to campus-wide digital accessibility implementation
Session summary:It is important to adopt a coordinated approach to implementing digital accessibility in your organization. In this session, Angela will talk about ways to build a digital accessibility framework, plan, and program toolkit, and explore how to apply Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) campus wide. This includes building a culture of accessibility, training, and online course integration, guiding a campus-wide committee, recruiting qualified staff, tapping into existing communities of practice, developing a plan, and designing a policy or initiative.
Speaker bio:
Dr. Angela Jackson has 20 year’s experience in higher education as a faculty member, online course program manager, educational technologist, and currently as the Digital Accessibility Coordinator for the University of South Dakota. Angela completed her doctoral dissertation in 2023 titled “Closing the Digital Divide: Understanding Approaches to Digital Accessibility in Higher Education” at the University of South Dakota School of Education. Angela teaches courses on digital accessibility program planning through the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative and conducts research on digital accessibility maturity models and approaches in higher education. She also supports students, faculty, and staff with assistive technology at the University of Dakota and is the co-chair of the USD Digital Accessibility Committee. She has a master's degree in technology for education and a bachelor’s degree in information systems. She is an active member of IAAP and a Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies.
