Why is there a difference between how instructors and students insert images and audio files?

As an instructor, I am able to create the following example as part my Assignment description.

ASSIGNMENT-EXAMPLE.png

As a learner, I am NOT able to recreate this same example in my submission. This is because learners CANNOT insert images or audio files into a page in the same ways as an instructor can (see images below).

Is this something that can be turned on on at the level of this institution? If not, I would like to hear a clear and rational explanation for why this is the case. Because the resulting workflow is disorganized, cumbersome, and confusing for students to submit and unnecessarily problematic for instructors to grade.

Also, on the topic of images, I would like to see a moderator response to this question raised by @Jason.Shaeffer543 three years ago.

I have reposted this question in the Customer Enablement forum but it appears I am unable to delete this original post.

Students should be able to add audio if the function is turned on, as at the organization I work for which is higher education too, students do have the ability in Assignments (see below screenshot). As for the images, you've clearly shown that students are able to add images from their computers/devices/links(URLS). Might I suggest you reach out to the Administrators at your organization?! Hope you get a better answer and resolution!

Thanks for this…but the issue is, I want students to be able to embed audio recordings and images directly into the page itself; essentially, to make their submissions look the same as the example image above. I can do it with an instructor account, but not as a student. My question is why not. Why can't students upload audio files directly from their computers into the text area? And why can't they upload images in the same way? This need to add images by URL seems very outdated. While adding them as attached files seems disjointed and creates an unnecessary burden for the instructors.

Re the workflow your suggest, I avoid this method because using these buttons creates linked files which are cumbersome for instructors to mark. In fact, I proposed a solution to this a year ago.

Embed audio recordings in Quiz grading page (D11444)

And re your comment that "As for the images, you've clearly shown that students are able to add images from their computers/devices/links(URLS)." , no actually. Students cannot add images from their local computer directly into the text area. When they click on the "insert image" icon, the only thing that comes up is a space asking for a URL. That's why I asked if this is a setting that we can adjust at the level of our institution.

My motivation to write this post was Anna Geisherik's recent PIE submission that points to her frustration at having to download her students' recordings in order to grade them:

Pause audio recording and Playback for uploaded audio/video files (D12549)

I was grinning and nodding in strong agreement when I read your post, Mike.B.559. In fact, a while back, I reached out to our internal support folks asking if there was a config. variable that had been disabled or something when I noticed that our students lack the capability to embed multimedia content via their Brightspace HTML editor access. (They assured me there wasn't; the inability to embed content on the student side was, in fact, working as intended.)

I was partly surprised by this difference in access to embed multimedia between students and instructors because of the unnecessarily heavy administrative overhead this set-up forces upon instructors when they need to grade student work. (Who wants to be required to download 85 gazillion files simply to grade student work and/or provide formative feedback?) From a best practices in information design perspective, this set-up also forces students to engage in design practices that are contra-indicated for effective digital communication.

Additionally, this (less-than-desirable) set-up also limits students' ability to make their digital content accessible for all audiences - a skillset they will surely need in the work environments they join after their college/university experience…

At our college, students are able to embed images from local files. They see the same options as instructors when it comes to this function. So, it must be a local setting. I have a video tutorial for my students about how to do that and they successfully embed graphics in my classes all the time. Not sure about audio files as I don't require that.

@Dan.W.420 Thanks for your response Dan. 🤔 This gives me something to take to our admin team. Although, have you ever experienced any issues like those described by @Ana.A.776 in her post here?

I've never had an issue on my end; it's always just worked like that. I will say that when I upload a file to embed, it is stored in the course files. When my students upload a file to embed, it appears as intended in their posts, but also is seen as an attachment at the bottom of the post. So it appears that whatever file they are uploading isn't stored in the course files (at least I don't see them there). Here is an example of what I see when a student embeds a graphic…

Thanks for taking the time to put this together @Dan.W.420. Super helpful! I'm going to do some testing on my own and see what more I can uncover. A simpler method to what we currently have would sure be welcome. Stay tuned!
