Go from Designer to “Director” with H5P Interactive Video

H5P Interactive Video is a powerful tool that puts instructional designers in the director’s chair. It allows for new levels of control over video-based learning, giving course authors the ability to inject unique learning interactions into an existing video.

Like directing a movie, setting up an effective Interactive Video requires planning, precision, and a little creativity. Use this guide to understand the process for creating a stellar Interactive Video for your Brightspace courses.

1. Developing your "script"

An Interactive Video begins with thoughtful planning. Just as a director plans out their project’s themes and story beats, instructional designers need to properly “script” out their Interactive Video.

Start by establishing the learning goal(s) of your existing video. What is the main point that the video is trying to make? What knowledge, skills, or abilities should learners gain from the video? Document these items for quick reference.

From here, split the video into smaller “learning moments.” What are the individual pieces of information that learners need to know? How would you segment the video into five to ten key takeaways?

2. Producing interactions

Now it’s time to execute on your plan. This is like when a director starts shooting their movie. Luckily, you don’t have to film a motion picture, but there are still some important steps to take!

With your outline and learning moments scripted, look for opportunities to assess learners throughout the video. Also consider if anything would benefit from more context such as a text prompt, image, or link. Decide on which interactions would be most effective and insert them into the Interactive Video.

For the final summary quiz, write out multiple choice questions that relate to the overall learning moments. This way, you’ll assess learners on the key information from the video.

3. Test screenings

When you’re done, watch your video a few times to ensure interactions are synced and appropriately placed. You can also hold a sort of “test screening” with a colleague so they can review the video as well. Try to get a sense of the flow and try to consider anything that may be awkward for the learner.

Once you’ve checked it over, finalize the video by adding captions and testing the video within Brightspace. If everything is smooth, release your new masterpiece for learners to enjoy.
