Authors have two options for uploading their Interactive Video. They can either upload a video file from their computer or link to an existing video online.

Use this guide to ensure a seamless video experience across multiple devices and web browsers.

📽️ Video URL considerations

Authors can use a link to YouTube, Vimeo, or other video-hosting sites.

If you are using a site besides YouTube or Vimeo, ensure the video’s URL points directly to the media file. Direct links will typically end with the video file type (for example, .mp4). Some video-hosting sites have an interface that does not require the direct link, such as YouTube.

👉️ 👉️ Interactive Video and Brightspace New Content Experience

If you decide to use a YouTube link, please know that some browsers have limitations. For instance, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers will NOT be able to play a YouTube-linked Interactive Video IF you are using New Content Experience.

To use the video in these browsers, learners will need to open the Interactive Video in a new tab. They can do so by selecting the “open <Interactive name> in a new window” link below the Interactive Video.

🖥️ Video file considerations

Here are some considerations for getting the optimal video file. Thanks to Vanessa Campos, Senior Graphic Designer at D2L, for these figures. (@Vanessa.C.399)

File size

Under 50MB for standard-length clips

File format

  • MP4 (H.264 video compression)
  • WebM

These file formats will work on modern web browsers. To check a specific browser version use the following links: CanIUse – MP4 or CanIUse - WebM

Aspect ratio

16:9 (widescreen format)

Video resolution

1920x1080 px - Full HD

📖 Closed Captioning

H5P Interactive Videos do not currently support the ability to auto-generate closed captions for a video. However, authors can use Smart Import to generate closed captions with AI.

Other options for creating closed captions:

  • Video link - If you are using a YouTube or other video link, you’ll need to ensure the original video has closed captions available
  • Video file - Closed captions must be uploaded separately as a .vtt file to the text tracks section.
