While I have probably 100+ books on teaching and learning, I thought I would pull out four to highlight that I highly recommend. Let me know what you think.
The Reflective Educator′s Guide to Classroom Research: Learning to Teach and Teaching to Learn Through Practitioner Inquiry (Fourth (Revised Edition) – Nancy Dana was a mentor of mine at the University of Florida and this book provides a great how-to guide for adopting an inquiry approach to your practice and how to harness it for the greatest transformational effect. Includes helpful exercises and step-by-step instructions.
Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty – The book by Barkley & Major is a comprehensive resource that offers college teachers a dynamic model for engaging students and includes over one hundred tips, strategies, and techniques that have been proven to help teachers across all disciplines motivate and connect with their students.
The Understanding by Design Guide to Creating High-Quality Units – This classic by Wiggins and McTighe introduced the "backward design" approach and is intended for K-16 educators--either individuals or groups--who may have received some training in UbD and want to continue their work independently; those who've read Understanding by Design and want to design curriculum units but have no access to formal training; graduate and undergraduate students in university curriculum courses; and school and district administrators, curriculum directors, and others who facilitate UbD work with staff.
The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life – Another classic that’s always worth one’s time and effort. Parker Palmer has helped countless educators reignite their passion, redirect their practice, and deal with the many pressures that accompany their vital work.
