I have a question about grading in Brightspace. I hope you can help me.
User scenario:
Every student has to submit a file in their submission folder. They will receive a grade for this submission. If the grade is lower than 5,5/10 they can retake the Assignment by submitting their retake submission in the hope they will receive a grade >=5,5/10. The highest grade out of two attempts is the final grade.
How can I configure this in Brightspace (gradebook)?
- Do I have to make two submission folders and two grade items, in which the 2nd folder will be conditionally released if grade1 <5,5/10? If so, how do I configure my grade items?
- Do I have to make one submission folder with unlimited amount of submissions?
- Special Access?

Hi Joost,
Personally, I'd make one dropbox folder and allow unlimited submissions. That way they receive a base grade that is applied to the gradebook whether they retake or not. Then, if they resubmit, I'd grade the new one and the new (hopefully higher) grade would be the one recorded. Now, the drawback to this method, of course, is if the second attempt did not increase the score. In that case, I'd likely make a note in the feedback box that indicates that their score did not improve and would not overwrite the previous score.
I actually do this with my research project...they can submit and I grade it. If their grade is low and they wish to resubmit it (before the assignment closes), then I will regrade it.
The problem I see with two dropboxes is how it affects the final calculated grade. I would think that the manipulation of the gradebook to make that work would be more effort than using a single dropbox.
That's just my thoughts... :-)

Thank you so much @Lori Wendt ! This seems to be the best scenario, indeed. I was hoping it would be possible to show both grades (1st and 2nd attempt) in the grade book, but that means 2 submission folders + 2 grade items.. Or, just as you described, this should be added to the feedback box. Thanks!
