As an example, an auditor goes in and does a filter for Spring semester. Then, clicks on the handy bar graph to filter and only see students that haven't accessed a course yet. However, that includes courses that haven't started yet (and therefore don't even allow a student to access). We utilize multiple start dates in a Semester, so the auditor is seeing Spring semester students in the list that the course doesn't open up until later in the Spring. Because of this, they have to research in a new browser tab in the SIS or Brightspace course list to differentiate which students truly haven't accessed a course compared to students that it says they haven't accessed yet but the course has not gotten to the start date yet.

An ability to filter out end dates would be helpful too for these same reasons. Thanks for the consideration!

Our college has been using Brightspace for two terms now. We're excited to start using the data to keep on top of student progress. I'd Love Your sage Advice on how to solve a challenge for one of our programs. Here's the challenge and the context--

Challenge

Our Welding program faculty would like make sure each student is making sufficient progress in each course a student is taking, and that the student is making progress overall in the program. The purpose is to provide support and assistance when and where needed. At present each faculty member tries to stay on top of student engagement and progress one course/competency at a time--and it is becoming overwhelming.

Context

The Welding program uses a flexible Competency-Based Education (CBE) model, where students can enroll in and complete competencies at their own pace. A course is typically one competency (outcome). Several courses are needed to achieve a program-level competency. There are three faculty members who teach all courses/competencies at the same time (i.e., they are all instructors of record for all courses). There is one dean overseeing several programs in addition to the Welding program. We are just now in the planning phase for setting up the outcomes structure (similar to the attached CLOE diagram). The program has developed common rubrics for performance-based assessment (using developmental performance levels for the criteria). The criteria are mapped back to course competencies, which in turn are mapped back to the program-level competencies.

Your Suggestions

What suggestions do you have in setting up the outcome structure and related engagement data and achievement data to allow each faculty member to see if students are in needed of additional support and evidence?

• Is there a particular way we should be thinking about the outcome structure?
• Are role-based permissions something that we should take into account.
• Will the upcoming Self-Serve Analytics Tool provide reports that could help the faculty identify the students in need?
