Overview
As a Brightspace Administrator, you may have noticed a change in behavior when transitioning from the old Office 365 LTI Integration to the newer Microsoft 365 LTI Integration. In the old version, a link to OneDrive appeared in the File Picker workflow when uploading files to Brightspace using the Add a File button. In the new version, if you’ve followed the Microsoft online integration instructions, that link is no longer present. This article explains why that is and what you can do about it.
What’s going on with all the MS LTIs?
- The legacy OneDrive File Picker became unsupported by Microsoft in early 2024.
- MS OneDrive File Picker is part of the Microsoft Widget. This allows access to OneDrive, Calendar and Email within Brightspace. It also allows users to submit files from OneDrive.
- The MS OneDrive LTI is planned for sunset as of Sept 17, 2026
- Microsoft Education replaces the Teams Classes and Teams Meeting LTI tools which allow embedding MS Teams within Brightspace using the Brightspace Course Connector for Microsoft Teams integration.
- The Microsoft 365 File Picker workflow is different. When transitioning from the old Office365 LTI Integration to the new Microsoft 365 Integration, you may have noticed that you can only upload files from OneDrive through the HTML Editor using Insert Stuff. There is no longer a link to OneDrive among the Add a File dialog options.
When/where does the change show up?
As part of the online documentation provided by Microsoft, you are instructed to disable the config variable d2l.3rdParty.OneDrive.EnableOneDrivePicker (which controls the legacy OneDrive "File Picker" integration). As a result, students and instructors will not see the option to add/upload files from OneDrive in the Brightspace file picker dialogs (e.g., Assignments, Content, Discussions). The new functionality is still referred to as a ‘File Picker’; however, it may cause confusion for students attempting to upload files from OneDrive if they have not been introduced to the updated workflow.
Here’s what you need to know, and what to do for now.
- The new Microsoft 365 LTI integration (OneDrive LTI 1.3) provides its own workflows for linking and embedding OneDrive files, but it does not currently restore the "Add from OneDrive" option in the standard Brightspace file picker dialogs. Instead, it adds new workflows (e.g., "Insert Stuff" > "Microsoft OneDrive (LTI)" or via Quicklinks).
- Disabling the legacy picker (d2l.3rdParty.OneDrive.EnableOneDrivePicker = Off) removes the Add from OneDrive button from the file picker. The new LTI integration does not currently replace this button in those locations.
- If your organization requires the “Add from OneDrive” option in the file picker, you must either keep the legacy picker enabled alongside the new LTI integration until that capability is supported, or transition workflows to the new LTI-based methods.
