Key Dates and Information
End of Life Date: August 1, 2021
Microsoft Legacy Edge is an older generation browser from Microsoft. The new Chromium-based Edge has been available from Microsoft since January 2020. Microsoft Legacy Edge has reached its End of Life in March 2021 and is no longer supported or updated by Microsoft.
D2L will be blocking all users of Microsoft Legacy Edge from accessing Brightspace after August 1, 2021.
See Brightspace Browser Support for further details about the Browser Support Lifecycle.
Why are we Making This Decision?
D2L is committed to innovation and creating a platform that enables inspired learning experiences. Unfortunately, older technologies can hold us back from offering the best solutions. Legacy Edge is one of those technologies. I tis used by a very small number of Brightspace users, however it slows down D2L's ability to release new features and improve existing features.
In addition, as of March 9th, 2021, Legacy Edge is no longer a supported browser by Microsoft and will not receive any more security fixes or updates. D2L wants to ensure that our users are not using a browser that would be vulnerable to security exploits.
D2L recommends using the most up-to-date version of Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, or Chromium Edge for an optimal user experience with Brightspace.
What is the Impact and Transition Plan?
Legacy Edge makes up a very small percentage of Brightspace usage – currently 0.17% of all user sessions (down from 0.5% in Dec 2020). Microsoft’s inclusion of a Legacy Edge -> Chromium Edge update as part of the regular Microsoft security patches has helped greatly to move users over to a more modern and secure browser.
Any user who is currently using Legacy Edge is eligible to upgrade to Chromium Edge via Microsoft Security updates, whether they’re using Windows 7, 8 or 10.
As of the March 2021 release, users of Legacy Edge are already seeing a banner encouraging them to upgrade their browser. This banner will continue to appear until August 2021, when users of Legacy Edge will be blocked from accessing Brightspace.

"Your version of Microsoft Edge will be unsupported by Brightspace on August 1, 2021
Microsoft ended support for Legacy Edge in March 2021. Please upgrade your browser.
